Location
This shot was taken at a park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada called Assiniboine Park. I was at the park with my son, niece and sister-in-law and the tulips were just to beautiful to resist. Love when I have my camera and the unexpected is there to surprise me and take my breath away.Time
It was taken in the afternoon on a beautiful spring day. The sun was shining, it was warm and the kids were enjoying the park.Lighting
I shot this with my D90 at F2. I knew that I wanted the focus on one flower and the rest to blur in the background, the bokeh look turned out just the way I wanted it too.Equipment
This was shot with my D90 and the kit lens, 18-105. My f stop was at F2 because I wanted that beautiful booked look. No tripod or flash. Just hand held with natural lighting.Inspiration
Tulips being my favourite flower and purple my favourite colour, it didn't take much for me to be inspired. I have this picture in my office and look at it every day. I gave it to a friend for Christmas in a beautiful frame and she thought the photo came with the frame. She didn't believe that I had taken the photo.Editing
I shoot in RAW, so yes, I did some post-processing. I would have adjusted the exposure to my liking, would have increased the contrast and whites and taken down the blacks. I would have also increased the clarity and vibrance, and I think I cropped it a bit.In my camera bag
Things have changed in my bag since I took this photo. My camera bag includes a Nikon D750, 50 mm, 85 mm and my 70-300 mm. My external flash with extra batteries, an extra camera battery and a few extra SD cards are in there too. You can never be too prepared! A wide angle lens is missing from my bag but it's on my wish list.Feedback
Practice, practice, practice! It took time for me to get this kind of shot. I took courses, asked other photographers for advice and didn't give up. It is so easy to get discouraged but don't give up. Keep trying. Ask for feedback, advice and tips. Remember that if you want shallow depth of field, an f-stop of 4 and under works well.
