Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in brittany (France) on the north coast at "Phare du Minou" near Brest

Time

I took that photo right after the sunset. I was shooting the lighthouse from another angle before and during the sunset and with the beautiful late afternoon light i carried on from this angle before dark.

Lighting

I wanted that photo to have a dramatic feeling so i decided to shoot it after the sunset with a long exposure.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 550d and a sigma 17-50 f2.8. I used a tripod and a wire remote.

Inspiration

I new that place for a long time and thought there was great photos to be taken there. I usually don't just go out wondering with my camera looking for place and hoping for the best light. Instead i have a list a potentially interesting places (that i discover sightseeing with my family usually in the middle of the afternoon when the light is crap anyway) and come back there when the conditions are perfect (great light, right amount of clouds, good angle for the sun to lighten the subject).

Editing

I did a little bit of post processing in Lightroom. Nothing fancy, i just adjusted the white balance, and then tweaked the amount of light in different areas of the picture.

In my camera bag

A 2nd battery A remote to shoot long exposure photos A tripod Plastic bags to water proof my camera and lense if raining Filters (gray, polarized) A weight to weight my tripod when the wind is strong.

Feedback

Find a beautiful lighthouse next to where you're staying, explore it and find the best angle to shoot it. Then think about what you're trying to achieve and determine what light you need and thus when you are likely to get that (summer? winter? morning? afternoon? evening? sunny? cloudy? misty? full moon? pitch dark night?...). If you don't have any idea you can look how other photographers choose to shoot it... And wait for the ideal conditions! This can take months!!! so you'd better live close to your spot :)
