I always wanted to capture moments like these , totally spontaneous and ittery beautiful in the same time.

Modern stories about today's seaman and its demanding job doesn't exist. Not seeing family for most of year,
trapped somewhere between reality and dream constantly tired and exhausted in order to keep up with hard work.
I image us like miners, no matter how hard it is you will always come back for more.

This photography represents one of daily routines on chemical tankers, donning chemical suit and breathing apparatus in order to keep yourself safe from many toxic cargoes carried on-board .In some cases Its needed as little as 1 ppm (point per million) of a particle to be exposed.

Behind The Lens

Location

One of the interesting points when i look back is exactly where this photo was taken, and that was on-board chemical tanker while we were underway crossing Pacific Ocean which takes around 30 days on the open sea.

Time

I have a routine that on most days after work I will take my camera and I will walk around the ship in order to find something interesting to photograph. It was a late afternoon , pretty dark day with alot of clouds and rain and there I found Christian sitting and having his own personal time off and it was such a rare and beautiful moment I was so glad I was able to capture it . The Day was 23 of May 2015 19:00 lt

Lighting

Photograph was taken under natural light , converting it to B&W it gave the picture that dynamic light i was searching for.

Equipment

This was shot on Canon 5D Mark II and lens Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM

Inspiration

I always wanted to capture moments like these , totally spontaneous and ittery beautiful in the same time. Modern stories about today's seaman and its demanding job doesn't exist. Not seeing family for most of year, trapped somewhere between reality and dream constantly tired and exhausted in order to keep up with hard work.

Editing

Yes the original photo was in colour but I always felt something was missing , it was just not as i felt when i was taking the photograph. After importing it to Photoshop and converting it B&W using Nik Silver Effects Pro I knew I found what I was searching for. The great thing about Silver Effects its their contrast slider which we don't have inside Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS 6 (versions I'm currently using). That really made a difference because it got viewers eye attracted to details, expecialy on a chemical suit and the breathing apparatus. Anyway I'm intermediate when comes to post processing but i was very glad that i found the right recipe to spice the image .

In my camera bag

It took me a long time to collect the equipment I have in bag today. On the beginning on the carrier I just didn't know what lenses are good for me or what I should generally use. Today I'm really satisfied with my other pair of artificial eyes :) ,and they are 5D Mark II which is a full frame sensor and from the lenses i own Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II USM Lens and Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM. I also have a good Benq tripod , remote trigger , x-Rite Color Checker Passport and set up for an off camera flash in case i will needed it on some location.

Feedback

This picture was taken under special circumstances if I can say like that. I think its one of the rare portraits which exist today taken on a chemical tanker where safety is primary concern. Also worth mentioning i had to ruberise my body and protect my lens against any static electricity which can be produced if my camera accidentally falls down. In global my advice would be that you should try to look good and featured photographs on view bug and other social photography involved communities . See bad and good reviews , get your eye accustomed to details, try to transfer that seeing into amazing feeling that something really special is happening in front of you and in the end you just need to hope when you put those photographs in computer that you have a winner. :) Thanks for the opportunity to be featured on viewbug.com!
