Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on Cobb Mountain, in Lake County, California. This is the swath that would later be consumed by the Valley Fire

Time

2 pm. The sun was low enough on the horizon to capture its light through the leaves.

Lighting

Backlighting brings a ton of detail to something as drab as a dying leaf. Not only do you end up with a halo you gain a deeper appreciation of the finer details that leaves have.

Equipment

Nikon D-40 no filter.

Inspiration

I love nature and I love photography that takes you deeper into the natural world. The leaves in the sun and against that blue sky were amazing. My inspiration was the contrast in colors and tones that you see in the photograph.

Editing

Nope. I try to not touch up photographs. That rule makes photography more challenging and me a better photographer.

In my camera bag

I travel light... no bag. Just the camera and the lens of choice for the day.

Feedback

leaves have their own little bit of magic so using them to block the sun works only because they have the cellular capabilities to deal with UV light. Be safe when shooting these kinds of shots that you do not damage your eyes. I wear UV coated glasses and I never linger when looking or framing a shot.
