This photo was taking on the land of the owner of this vehicle. Little story with this vehicle is yes it is a US Army truck. Was used in the Korean War and was actually leant to the Canadian Army. Canadian Numbers and Maple Leaf on the front bumper. I am a self taught photographer. I have attended workshops to help develop my skills as well as practice as much as I can to improve my skills.Time
This photo was taking early evening in June. We were a little worried during the day as it had been raining so we were playing with the idea of maybe postponing to another day. Lucky for us the sun came out late afternoon and dried things up a little bit. Then of course as we were getting ready for this set (we started off with a 1942 Harley Davidson that the Canadians used in World War II) the clouds started to slowly roll in again and we were worried that the rain would start againaLighting
With the clouds moving in we were starting to get a nice soft light coming on to us. We had positioned the truck so the sun was slightly behind it so we could get a bit of nice backlighting as well as using a flash to get a nice exposure on my model.Equipment
This was shot with the Canon 5D Mark II with a 50 mm Prime Lens. I also used the Canon 580 EX II for flash with a Rogue Flashbender to soften the light. Shot at f/10 1/200 with an ISO 250. Flash setting was set to approx 1/2 power.Inspiration
I love the 40's era. The music, clothes vehicles and just their way of life. With a majority of my Grandfather's family taking part in World War II I was naturally drawn to the pin up era. This was my first pin up shoot and both the model and the vehicle owner were quite happy with the final product.Editing
There wasn't a whole lot of post processing involved. Everything was done in Lightroom with this photo. PLayed with the saturation as well as burned the sky in a little bit to make the clouds pop. Increased the clarity to put a final touch to the photo. In my camera bag
I normally carry in my bag my Canon 5D Mark II, Sigma 85 mm, Canon 24-105 mm, Canon 50 mm, Canon 580 EX II, Canon 430 EX II, Rogue Flashbender Kit, Manfrotto Tripod, Rogue Flash Gels. Every once in awhile I will carry my Sigma 150-500 mm lens with me.Feedback
Hmmm....well the best advice I can give is to have fun with it. For this shoot I had music from the 40's playing in the background. If you are using someone else's property, especially the classic, restored vehicles, please show the utmost respect for the vehicle. Ask the owner of the vehicle if you can place your model on or in the vehicle. This respect earned will potentially allow the owner to lend you another vehicle for a shoot. With the owner of this vehicle I can pretty well call him up and say "Hey! I have this idea for a shoot with this vehicle. What are your thoughts and when are you available for us to access it?" Since this shoot I have never had a problem using more of his vehicles due to the respect and trust that was earned on the first night. Give it a try! These shoots are a lot of fun but also a lot of planning involved!
