Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my bedroom at home one night.

Time

This photo was taken very late at night/early morning - around 2am.

Lighting

This was the very first time i had worked with this kind of lighting. It was on a slow aperture and my younger step brother was holding the candle which was the only source of light in the room. He worked very well as a model and was very patient.

Equipment

This was shot on a Fujifilm FinePix S9000. The lens was a Fujinon zoom lens 28-300mm. I used a tripod but unfortunately I don't know the make. The image was initially shot in RAW.

Inspiration

At the time i was very interested in mysterious lighting. I was also a big fan of horror movies and wanted to capture an image that portrayed a sinister and mysterious feeling. I experimented with the harsh light of torches and the warmer tones of candles. When the shoot had finished and i was looking through my images i decided i much preferred the warm tones of the candle as i felt it gave the image more detail and enhanced the shadows. I was also exploring with reflections, hence the use of the mirror.

Editing

The image was shot in RAW so i changed the vibrancy/saturation slightly and then changed it to a JPEG.

In my camera bag

On a day to day basis, in my bag I normally carry my Canon EOS Rebel T5 along with my Canon Macro Lens 18-55mm (0.25m/0.8ft). I also carry a back up SD card (32 Gb) and a back up battery along with my charger. I have a UV filter permanently fixed onto my lens and I carry my hood cap. I take my camera everywhere with me so i like to keep things light.

Feedback

A tripod and a slow shutter speed are key! If you are taking photos of a person, make sure they can keep completely still for a long period of time. Make sure your model is comfortable and are in a position they can hold. My model was sitting comfortably on a few cushions and was in a warm room. this was to allow him to be able to sit still and not get a dead leg or be cold ect. Alternatively you could get a model to sit on a black chair or a stool.
