Behind The Lens

Location

I love this image. I was walking around Washington DC during Cherry Blossom week (when the city is more beautiful then ever) and noticed this couple resting on one of the benches across from Thomas Jefferson Memorial.

Time

I spent most of the morning and early afternoon walking around taking pictures of Cherry Blossoms with lots of people enjoying the day, both locals and tourists. It was later in the afternoon, as the sun crossed the halfway point, when some people started occupying the benches to rest their feet and catch their breath. This picture was taken around 2pm on April afternoon.

Lighting

The day light was a perfect backdrop for this image.

Equipment

This shot was taken with Nikon D5100 with 18-200 lens. This is my default all purpose lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The shot speaks for itself. After walking among excited (and loud) locals and tourists who came out to see Cherry Blossoms all day, it was a great moment to capture a quite resting moment for a young tired couple.

Editing

As soon as I took the shot, I envisioned it being a black and white picture with overexposed light to accent the emotion.

In my camera bag

For quick travel, I normally carry my trusted Nikon D5100 with 18-200 and 35" lenses. Additionally, as much as I prefer natural light, I generally bring my Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight flash.

Feedback

The best tip I can offer is to pay attention to the surrounding. In this particular case, my main purpose was to shoot nature and DC architectures, yet paying attention to the people around, and even going a bit of the beaten path, can yield great unexpected results.
