This was a small short lived storm that moved over Maseru in Lesotho in December 2014. Despite its small size and short duration (it only lasted between 15 and 20 minutes) it produced some truly spectacular lightning. The house in the photo is my grandparents house and I thought that it (together with the power lines) provided a good point of interest for the shot.

Behind The Lens

Location

I shot the photo in front of my grandparent's house in Maseru in Lesotho.

Time

I don't remember the exact time but Ai think it was around between 8pm and 8:30pm.

Lighting

I relied purely on the artificial lights from the house and the outdoor floodlights to add a spark to the scene and of course the light from the lightning itself to give the picture it gravitas.

Equipment

I shot the photo with a Nikon D5000 and an 18-70mm lens. The camera was mounted on a tripod and I used a Nikon MC-DC2 remote cable release to activate the shutter.

Inspiration

I don't have really much to about it really. I guess just my love of nature and storms. I just live to capture the forces of nature on camera and document their amazing power.

Editing

Nope. This photo is 100% unedited

In my camera bag

My camera, two lenses, extra battery, extra memory card, cable release and camera cleaning tools.

Feedback

Photographing lightning requires proper planning and a good general knowledge of the weather and how it works. Ensure you have the proper equipment for the task and the most important thing of all, be safe. Lightning is extremely dangerous and deadly. Take the necessary precautions when you're out there. If the lightning starts striking too close for comfort, pack your equipment, get out of there and head indoors (or your car if you have driven to a vantage point). Your life is far more important than a perfect lightning shot.
