Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot through the glass of my patio doors in my backyard. Chipmunks are regular visitors looking to scavenge anything dropped from the bird feeders.

Time

Mid afternoon

Lighting

No special lighting, just afternoon sun hitting the west side of the house.

Equipment

Canon EOS 70D EF-S17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM (my favorite 'all-purpose' lens) ƒ/4.0 55.0 mm 1/160 ISO 100

Inspiration

I tend to hand feed the chipmunks that frequent my patio. I sit on the floor just inside the patio door and they come up to the stoop to get peanuts. I usually leave a few around the pots and planters for them to find even when I'm not there. The new ones get over their hesitation much more quickly when they see others being fed, and I can usually count on one or more remembering the program when they come out of hibernation in spring. Some have distinct markings or behaviors that allow me to recognize them individually.

Editing

I try to do as little post as possible, but usually add a bit of sharpness/clarity in Lightroom and tweak the exposure if necessary. I also use a preset on load to match the lens profile and adjust for any distortion.

In my camera bag

Aside from the camera I usually have my 17-55 f2.8, a 70-300 zoom, and a 50mm prime.

Feedback

The photographic technique was nothing special. To get familiar with the chipmunks I would just sit in the open doorway and read a book, making sure there was seed around for them, and talking to them to get them accustomed to my presence as they began to come in closer. Then once they knew I wasn't going to eat them I could start to hold the peanuts in my hand for them to take.
