The korimako is one of two New Zealand birds that belong to the honeyeater family (Meliphagidae) found in Australasia and Pacific islands. The other is the tūī (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae novaeseelandiae) and both species are endemic to New Zealand. Smaller than the tūī and just a touch bigger than a sparrow, males are olive green with a dark purplish sheen on their head and black outer wing and tail. Females are a duller olive green-brown with a yellowish-white curve from the base of the bill to below the eye. Both have a notably red eye.
