Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a remote home on the mountains. More than an hour of motorcycle rough road ride from the municipality and about an hour tedious trek on the hills and mountains. So I consider this shot to be tiring and hard but fulfilling and a memorable one.

Time

This was shot on an early foggy day when the sun was shining through the haze in the valley. You can smell the freshness of the wind and feel the morning dew. A typical rustic setting among the mountains.

Lighting

I took advantage of the harsh lighting from the outside striking through the craftily designed bamboo window at the right side of the subject. The light from the door at the left side provided some fill light. The pattern of the design forms a shadow on his cheek. The absence of frontal lighting made it rather a mysterious scene, the blank stare on his eyes, directing the attention to the emotion made, coupled with the smoke from the cigarette.

Equipment

This shot was made with a Nikon D7000 and a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX lens, handheld and flash was not used.

Inspiration

I seized the moment when there was some tension going on. The subject lighted a cigar, contemplating upon situation, relieving the stress that might have affected him.

Editing

In this particular workflow, I converted the color picture into black and white, adjust levels, sharpness and clarity, cropped and finished it with vignetting as to desired effect.

In my camera bag

I typically pack light. Just a Nikon D7000 body with a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX lens for low-light situations, an 18-55mm nikon kit lens for most of my shots and a Yongnuo YN565ex Speedlight. All light-weight and suits my style of shooting.

Feedback

Be ready to shoot when moment comes. Capturing expressions is the most important for me. I still believe the “decisive moment” – the right place, right time, right angle, good composition and pre-visualization before capturing the image makes the difference. P.S. I made a motion picture from several still photographs of capturing the right moment ;) https://billgange.wordpress.com/2015/05/27/in-pensive-mood/
