Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico while I was on vacation in June 2015.

Time

I shot a series of photos at and just after sunset. I particularly like to take sunrise/sunset photos.

Lighting

There was a little artificial lighting from the building behind me that you can see casting shadows in the foreground. But other than that, it's all natural light.

Equipment

I shot this using an Olympus C7070 prosumer camera. Because of the low light, I had to use a tripod for the long exposure times.

Inspiration

A photography meetup up group I am a member of occasionally does photo scavenger hunts. That month a body of water was one of the items on the list. Plus, we were staying at a place right on the beach. Beach and ocean sunset shots are always worth taking.

Editing

I used Lightroom for some minor exposure, contrast, and saturation tweaks. I learned photography using film cameras where you couldn't take lots of photos hoping for a few good ones. With film photography you learned to get the shot right in the camera. So that's what I do. I try not to need to do much post-processing.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, I have a Nikon D3300 with an 18-55mm lens and an additional 50mm prime lens. I usually carry a tripod all the time too. My Olympus C7070 is now my backup camera. I will be adding a 70-200/300 zoom lens soon. That's pretty much all I carry.

Feedback

For taking low light, long exposure shots, use the camera timer if you don't have a cable release or remote control release. This will prevent any small vibrations from occurring when you press the shutter button.
