The picture was taken in my teaching room at home. I thought it was about time I had a decent shot of my violin, and the piano seemed like the perfect backdrop.Time
Mid morning if I remember correctly. Not usually time when I'm either playing or teaching, so it is often camera time!Lighting
This is natural lighting. There is a large patio door to the right of the piano, with vertical blinds which act as pretty decent diffusers.Equipment
I was playing with my new Panasonic Lumix FZ200, which was precariously balanced on my very old and rickety aluminium tripod. I really need to replace that!Inspiration
My violin has been one of my main sources of income throughout my professional life, so I thought I should really have a good shot of it. This one captures its dark and slightly mysterious side quite nicely I think.Editing
Just a bit of darkening around the shadows, and I took a bit of orange colour down to give the violin a slightly older feel.In my camera bag
I travel light. I took the decision to go with a bridge camera, as I'm often accompanied my my three children and couldn't face the thought of swapping lenses at the same time as wiping faces and generally being a parent.Feedback
Violins are a bit of a pain to position upright, as they have a button on the bottom which the tailpiece attaches to. Either use a cloth of some sort to sit the instrument on and support it, or you might be able to rig something up with string which you could remove in post processing. The last thing you want is an expensive instrument falling over!
