Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside of a little town in Northern California. My grandfather and I were both restless so we decided to take a little road trip.

Time

The photo was taken during an overcast late afternoon. My grandfather and I had been driving around the roads less traveled near his home. We happened to come across this old looking barn. It had just finished raining so everything had that damp look to it which darkened some of the fields and lightened others.

Lighting

Since this was shot during an overcast day so my focus wasn't so much about lighting as it was about figuring out a way to bring out the colors I was seeing in the landscape and not make it look too flat.

Equipment

This was shot on my old Canon rebel Xsi and a 28-90mm lens.

Inspiration

I've been on the hunt for abandoned or abandoned looking barns and found this one on the road trip with my grandfather. The cows in the fields just made the scene so I shot it.

Editing

I didn't do a whole lot of post-processing on photo. Just enough to bring the contrast up a bit and bring out the colors in the sky a little bit more since the clouds were going away.

In my camera bag

The first thing that usually goes in my bag is my Canon 60D. Then I put in the 18-135mm, which is my workhorse. I put in the 50mm 1.2 lens, which is my favorites lens and then the 75-300mm lens. I usually have a Canon K2 Rebel body for those shots that I want to develop out in a darkroom as a black and white and a couple rolls of film.

Feedback

For this shot, I would have missed it had I not been paying attention. Keep an eye out for the colors that can be hidden in clouds and get a general feel for the area. Know what depth of field you want to use and how it can impact what you're shooting.
