An Ethiopian salt worker takes a break after working in the salt mines of the Danakil Depression in the Afar region of Ethiopia. The brutal conditions, 125'F (54'C), make this one of the harshest and hottest regions in the world. The grueling work involves chipping salt blocks from the ground and mounting them on camels for a multi-day trek from Lake Asale to Mekele - a 7 day one-way trek. Villagers sell their salt blocks to companies roughly 5 cents per pound.
