How in the world did you manage to get this close? These cats are so shy and so wary. Amazing! You must have a great deal of patience and stalking skill!

It wasn't really my stalking skill or patience. I was able to attend a workshop and the animals one of which was this cat were brought out and worked with a trainer. It was amazing to see this huge cat and how he loved his trainer! Someday I'd like to capture photos of these cats and other wildlife in the wild, but until then I will take what I can get.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo near Touquerville Utah during a wildlife workshop.

Time

It was about 6:00 in the evening.

Lighting

The sun was low in the sky giving some really nice side lighting and making the sandstone a nice warm color.

Equipment

The camera used was a Canon EOS 5 D Mark 2 with a Tamron 200-500 zoom lens and a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

The workshop I attended was full of great photo opportunities to photograph animals that would normally not allow people to get close and some that you would not want to be close to if the trainers were not there. I love the grace and beauty of wild animals but finding them and photographing them in the wild has often eluded me so this was a unique chance to get close to them.

Editing

The white balance was corrected to a color temp. of 4500. Then the exposure was brought up a tiny bit (0.30) and the shadows were brought up to +25 in Lightroom. Finally the image was cropped and straightened.

In my camera bag

At the time this picture was taken I carried a Tamron 200-500 zoom, a Canon 50 mm prime lens and a 14 mm Rokinon lens along with the Canon 5 D Mark 2 body and an assortment of camera triggers and cables (for timelapse, lightning etc.) I also carry a flash and a few lens filters.

Feedback

If you are able to be a part of a wildlife workshop then I encourage you to take full advantage of it. The knowledge and skills of the instructor will prove invaluable and you will get a lot better results than trying to do everything on your own. Just make sure that you research the workshop first so you know if it and the teachers are a match for you.
