Behind The Lens

Location

I grew the sunflower in a flower pot from seed. I planted this flower specifically to capture this image. I also planted it in a flower pot to be able to transport the flower pot to get the best lighting. The image was taken in my backyard in Arizona. I used a dark backdrop about 4 feet from the image to create the black background.

Time

The photo was taken about 4:30pm. The sun was in front of the flower. The flower was in front of the dark background.

Lighting

I wanted the image to have both high and low lights. I initially took this shot in color. I used natural sunlight.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D750, AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II and held with Natural outdoor lighting.

Inspiration

I was inspired the prior year to take this image from a friend of mine. He is my mentor and I loved his work of sunflowers.

Editing

Yes, I did post-processing. I first processed this image in color. This was one of the first images I captured with my new camera. I like to think this was a happy surprise when it was finished. I am not sure of all the things I did to process this image as I was also learning LightRoom.

In my camera bag

I believe in quality over quantity. I am slowly adding to my photography bag. I have the Nikon D750, AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II and recently added a Nikon AF FX NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D.

Feedback

I first took this image with a cloudless blue sky. I was not happy with the background and thought it was too plain for my taste. So I then moved the flower pot around my backyard until I thought the light I wanted was perfect. At first I tried the image with the blue sky and was not able to get the effect I wanted in LightRoom or PhotoShop. I wanted to create a black background. So I got creative. I used an 8 foot ladder and placed it behind the flower. I put a dark tablecloth over the ladder. I got as close to the flower as the lens would allow me and took the shot. This my favorite capture of a flower that I have taken so far. Growing if from seed only adds to my pleasure when I see it.
