This photo was a complete instinct shot and has been one of my most viewed and most liked photos in Viewbug. I actually took this from the passenger's seat while my husband was driving. This is a typical prairie storm that we experience in Sylvan Lake, ABTime
This photo was taken July 27, 2013 @ 17:57 (thanks iPhone for that information)...I wouldn't have remembered the exact time otherwise. But I know it would have been late afternoon. We often have amazing thunderstorms in Sylvan Lake later in the day. We were driving from town back to our cabin, and the power in that sky took my breath away. I knew I needed to capture it.Lighting
The clouds darkened the sky, but enough natural sunlight highlighted the brilliant fields and clouds to give contrast. I did darken the lighting afterward to give the image more of an ominous feeling.Equipment
It was my good old iPhone 4...that's all I had with me at the time. We didn't even stop driving our vehicle. I took this photo in a moving vehicle, through the window, with my phone. Sometimes the magic just happen!Inspiration
Nature itself. Looking at the power of the storm, the size of our Albertan skies, the gold in our fields. It was all right there, I had to capture it. The summer storms in Alberta become something to embrace, to expect almost daily, and to respect.Editing
I did some minor editing, darkened the lighting slightly, minimal enhancement of colour. The effect of taking the photo while moving and through a pane of glass has given the photo some graininess and blurring that makes it like a painting. In my camera bag
Aside from my iPhone, I usually have one of two Canons with me. My Canon PowerShot SX50 HS has given me so many beautiful outdoor photos. The zoom and clarity of the camera is amazing. Just recently I have purchased a Canon 6D with a 24-105 mm lens. I am still new to this camera and eager to learn more of what it can do for me. I am also lucky to have a 70-200mm lens to use when I feel like lugging it around!Feedback
Some photos take planning, some don't. I didn't plan on taking this photo that day. But sometimes nature gives you something you can't ignore. If it takes your breath away, take the shot.
