Location
It was taken from under the Millenium Bridge in London, United Kingdom, a beautiful steel suspension footbridge crossing the river Thames.Time
The shot was taken on a very cold afternoon on December 6, 2014. I was rushing to an appointment and happen to notice this tiny spot oft transparent floor when passing under the bridge. It was already getting dark but though running out of time I decided to take a couple of quick shots because I knew if I don't do it now I might never will do it again. I am very good in missing opportunities by finding interesting sceneries but postponing a shoot just because of being in a hurry.Lighting
As it was already getting dark I had to shoot in low light and therefore increased the ISO even though risking noise in the image.Equipment
It was shot with the usual equipment I always take with me when I am out in the city: a Nikon D5300 with a 15-55mm f/3.5 lens. I wish I had my tripod with me.Inspiration
Bridges are one of my favorite subjects in architecture. I remember as a child being puzzled by how it is possible to build these amazing and vast constructions in this huge gap of nothing between two places. Bridges have something magical and a deep symbolic meaning. I think everybody experienced somehow this feeling of transition when crossing a bridge from one point to another. As I am working on a series of pictures of bridges I tried to catch some decent shots of the Millenium Bridge before but none turned out very satisfactory as showing the bridge from the same usual perspectives seen on so many pictures before. So I was quite happy when I discovered the tiny spot of glass floor direct under the bridge. Even though the Millenium Bridge is actually not recognizable I am very happy with this shot. It shows some details of the bridge construction and the flow of movement from a different perspective. For me it also combines two of the central symbolic meanings: stability and transition.Editing
As I was in hurry I could not spend much time on the camera settings and the picture turned out a bit underexposed. Apart from brightening the exposure and some general adjustments I focused on sharpening as I had to deal with some noise due to the high ISO setting. I always use Lightroom for post-processing.In my camera bag
I usually have my Nikon D5300 including a 15-55mm f/3.5 lens in my bag whenever I leave the house. I just bought it last year as my Nikon D7100 got to heavy to carry around nearly every day and I am quite happy with it as it actually does a pretty good job. I sometimes also pack a Manfrotto aluminum tripod, especially for night shots. What I usually forget to pack is a lens cleaning cloth and I meanwhile have an eclectic collection of them as I usually buy a new one if should I pass a photo shop on the way.Feedback
It can be quite tricky to get the right timing to press the release button to catch people walking fast over a transparent floor. Shooting in burst mode can bring some quick and good results as well a lot of material to choose from when it comes to composition. If possible use a tripod. Not only it avoids blurring by camera shaking it also prevents neck pain as you might have to take several shots over a period of time.
