What a stunning shot. Love the story of this shot that is all about family. And turning this into B/W really made this pop.

This photograph was taken in my studio in San Diego, CA. I have been photographing newborn babies as a specialty for about 5 years.Time
I have found that babies tend to sleep in mid morning so I schedule my newborn sessions for 10am to take advantage of the great light in my studio as well as having a sleepy baby.Lighting
For this image we were away from the windows in my studio a bit so I filled in the baby's face with a pop of strobe set off to the left of the frame.Equipment
This was shot using a Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 50mm f/2.5 compact macro lens and a pop of studio strobe in front of a bank of windows.Inspiration
I just love how tiny newborn babies are especially in comparison to their parents hands. I love the symbolism in this image of how trusting the baby is with her life and future resting in the hands of her parents.Editing
This image looked pretty great right out the camera, so all I had to do was clean up the baby's skin and convert the image to black and white. In my camera bag
I am far from being an equipment junkie. I'm very much a minimalist when it comes to gear. I always have my Canon 5D MarkII, Canon 24-105 f/4 L lens, Canon 50mm f2.5 compact macro, Canon 70-200mm f2.8L lens, 2-3 Canon Speedlites, as well as lots of cards and extra batteries. Attached to my bag is a 42" silver/white collapsible reflector.Feedback
Be sure the baby is safe at all times. This image was taken just inches above a soft blanket covered beanbag. The parents were on their knees on either side of the beanbag. We settled the baby into their hands on the beanbag and then when I was ready to shoot, they raised her up so the beanbag was out the frame. Safety is your number one priority when photographing babies. I will forgo an adorable shot if I don't feel the baby will be safe.
