Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a castle in Holland called Kasteel Heeschwijk, it was just after Christmas. A foggy day. We where there getting a tour of the castle and I shot this on the way inside the castle. People actually had to wait for me to take the shot :) Its one of the first shots I took when I started photographing. I had always loved photography but only three years ago started to dare take pictures myself. This one was taken with a very small simple Nikon compact camera.

Time

I think it was in the afternoon

Lighting

Not really it was a bit misty and there was nothing I could do lightening wise with the camera as at that time I only had a little Nikon I shot it with. I now have a better camera with which I can actually do my own settings manually. It goes to show though that you do not need expensive gear to take a nice pic. I say just start with what you have and shoot A LOT! A famous photographer once said; your first 10.000 photos will be your worst and I think its true. Taking a lot of pictures and training your eye and learning how to use your camera is one of the things that helps you grow and get good.

Equipment

A simple compact camera from Nikon.

Inspiration

I liked what I saw, the castle wall framing the tree. I wish the Christmas trees on either side of the castle wall werent there, I think that wouldve made the pic even better but it turned out ok. I also liked the slight mist and the fact the tree is bare. The whole thing looks almost fairytail like to me. So when I past it I thought I need to shoot that and I did holding up the tour group as I took the pic. Everywhere I go I always look around me carefully to see if there is anything worth shooting, I also take my camera everywhere. I find a lot of beauty can be found in things as they are. What I mean is, the world as it is. So not making your own scenes but shooting what is there. I find it a challenge to shoot those things and try to show people how much beauty there is in the world if only you really pay attention.

Editing

I did a little bit of basic post processing in Lightroom. I turned it to black and white and did a little cropping and sharpening.

In my camera bag

I always have in my bag my camera a Sony Cyber-shot, this camera is almost an in between model. Its not an SLR camera but it has a lot of functions similar to an SLR camera. You can manually set it for instance. But you can also use it like a compact camera. It has an amazing zoom. Its very versatile in what you can shoot with it which is what I like as I dont have a particular sort of photography I do,. I lots of different things. Its a good beginners cam. I hope to get a good SLR sometime now that I am progressing in my photography. I also carry an extra battery, USB sticks, camera cleaning stuff and a small but very handy gorilla pod. I dont like to carry too much gear when out and about.

Feedback

In general I think do not leave the house without your camera and look around you wherever you are. More specifically with this shot I think if in winter you visit a castle or an old ruien or such things youre likely to find similar scenes to shoot ai a doorway of some sort with a tree behind it. Ive actually taken more shots like this myself. I like the idea of framing in a pic and the feel of looking in somewhere. And as Ive explained you dont need a fancy camera for this shot. You might even be able to take quite a nice pic of this sort with your smart phone.
