Behind The Lens

Location

This photo has been taken at Ljubljana park Zoo

Time

the photo has been taken around 4 PM

Lighting

Light was scattered, due some trees there were zone of highlights and darkness, I waited for the right moment to shoot when it was almost all lightened by sun

Equipment

I used a Canon 1Dx with a telephoto lens (sigma 120-300 mm F2.8 S series) hand held.

Inspiration

the animal was free to walk in a large space. I was observing it starring at it it was calm. Then it felt annoyed (I guess) by me and it saw me very close to the fence. So it start pointing me as if it was starting an attack. I zoomed very close to it and I took the half face, concentrating on the eye

Editing

Actually the habits are to don't do any post-processing. I don't like to waste time on it. Sometimes just contrast/brightness and/or saturation. On this photo I just set brightness little bit dark and +5 on contrast

In my camera bag

According to the type of photography I am going to do, for naturalistic photography I usually have a telephoto lens, 120-300 mm with 2x focal duplicator, a Canon Camera and monopod. Telephoto lenses are usually heavy and if you need to carry for long time you can be suffering by weight.

Feedback

All naturalistic photography requires to be very patient. Sometimes it take long time to have a good shot because you are not an active part of the scene. It's very important to observe and study animal behaviour in order to anticipate the possible action. If you have the opportunity to visit the same place more times, you can learn more about the animal you are following and time after time you will understand what is going to happen next. In this way you can be ready to take a mastepiece.
