While on an anniversary trip to Italy, I scheduled one day just to visit this ancient hill town in Italy. It took nearly 2 hours just to get to this view, but it was well worth it. We then crossed over and photographed different parts of this almost deserted hill town, feeling as though going back in time while enjoying such a captivating site.

This image of historic Civita di Bagnoregio was taken on an anniversary trip to Italy, located near Orvieto.Time
After traveling more than an hour from Orvieto via bus to arrive nearby, I still had to ask locals repeatedly where Civita di Bagnoregio was, not even knowing how to pronounce it. I remember one elderly Italian woman repeatedly correcting my pronunciation of this quaint magnificent village and trying to tell me in a language I didn't understand, how to get there. After walking through the nearby town, over the last hill, there it was, like it was waiting to be discovered. I still remember being awestruck at its majestic beauty, thinking "Wow! This is amazing! This was so worth the entire trip!"Lighting
The sky was not as moody as it appears in this image but I felt the subject could use some drama, so I dodged and burned to create the feeling of the sun peeking through the clouds on a stormy day.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D800 with a 24-120mm lens.Inspiration
I arranged our entire itinerary of Italy around visiting this magnificent historic town and it was even more amazing than I imagined. I had seen a picture of it in one of Rick Steve's books with a short article and thought, "If I can get anywhere close to this magnificent village, I have got to get there to photograph it. Then I made it happen on our way from Venice to Rome by stopping in nearby Orvieto for several nights. The entire trip to Italy was amazing, but visiting here was icing on the cake -- a memory I'll never forget!Editing
In post, I converted the color image to B&W, darkened the exposure and increased contrast slightly, then dodged and burned the town building, walls and hillside to accent the drama that I felt at the time.In my camera bag
A Nikon D800 with 24-120mm is my travel kit. It allows me to get wide landscapes while also having some minimal level of telephoto capabilities for details.Feedback
There are plenty of images posted of this city. I was trying to capture something different, something I liked, something dramatic. Shoot and experiment with different settings and post processing techniques to obtain an image that satisfies you. I always shoot with the thought of "Would I be pleased to display this picture in my home?"
