I was out on a photo shoot for a friend's wedding announcement photo's.Time
It was earlier in the day, before noon. My friends and I were just wrapping up the shoot and on our way to one of our favorite weekend brunch spots to celebrate with a beer.Lighting
I took advantage of the natural diffusing quality of the clouds, so I wouldn't have to worry about any harsh lighting conditions.Equipment
I actually brought my full kit just in case but didn't use most of it for the shoot. For this particular shot I had my 7D and it's standard partner in crime the EF-S 15-85 hanging loosely on my shoulder by a Black Rapid. There's the perfect team and it paid off.Inspiration
Personally, I love the simple complexity of this picture. I love the balance and blending of the different shades. I love that the light plays off of the polished surface of the stone and the droplets. There's not a lot going on but it works well.Editing
I'm pretty sure that the only thing I did was turn it to a grey scale but I might have adjust some things with the curve tool while watching how that effected the histogram. I remember that I used to do that a lot at that point and since this was taken at the same time as my friend's announcement photo's, I may have spent a little more time on it than most.In my camera bag
Lately I've really toned it down. I have a Fuji X100T, a spare battery and card, just enough to throw in a jacket pocket but when I know that I want to experiment, the 7D and the rest of the kit get packed. I haven't found my niche yet and continue to favor a wide variety of photography disciplines.Feedback
As a photographer it's important to be in the moment but don't forget to take the time to take in your surrounding as well. I seriously took this picture on a whim as I was on my way to the bar. I had my camera ready and recalled walking by it earlier that day. I took enough time to frame what I wanted and then joined up with the rest of the group. I never expected this image to become as popular as it is but I'm grateful. Every time that I see another notification concerning it, I remember how important it is to pay attention and take that "gut shot."
