Behind The Lens

Location

I was on honeymoon on the South Island of New Zealand when I took this picture. We went for a cruise on Milford Sound, one of the most beautiful fjords in the world and the atmosphere was so charming and magical that we decided to come back the next day. It was the only place we visited twice during our trip

Time

Just before the sun went completely behind the mountain, the clouds passed over Mitre Peak and took those beautiful colors. I waited for a long time before take this shot.

Lighting

Everyone knows that the best time to take photographs is from just before to just after during sunrise and sunset. I think it's also important to know where the sun rise and set, and if there are "obstacles" in his way (mountains, trees, buildings). I use an app for this, so i know exactly what to expect when i arrive in place.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5d Mark II, a Canon 17-40 f/4, a Manfrotto tripod with 405 geared head, NDG Lee filters.

Inspiration

I loved the landscapes of New Zealand, i drove for 4000km and saw glaciers, rain forests, swamp forests, mountains and rivers, the ocean and the sea, waterfalls and lakes; i expected that, at any moment, from a forest or from behind a mountain, a dinosaur would come out, and it would have been perfectly normal! The weather change constantly during a day. From a stormy day to a sunny day, from a snowy day to a cloudy day... I read, before the trip, that New Zealand is beautiful with all kind of weathers. Well it's absolutley true! My intent was to capture that light and atmosphere.

Editing

Just a little bit of exposure, contrast and saturation. I do not like, in landscape photography, use too much of post-processing: for this the filters are my most important equipment!

In my camera bag

i normally take with me: 2 DSLR cameras, 1 film camera (6x6 or 6x4.5, sometimes even an old Polaroid 600), 3 lenses (from 17mm to 200mm), tripod+head, filters (ND, NDG, Polarizer), an USB fan (for humidity and condensation issues) and all the other usual stuff (cards, battery, cleaning kit, etc.)

Feedback

Be patient: wait for the light! Be ready for everything: light conditions, weather conditions, equipment conditions.
