This photo was taken in Paris on 25.12.2014, best Christmas gift I ever received.Time
The sun was just setting and the light was gorgeous. My friend, here in the photo, was walking us around Paris on Christmas Day. We must have walked like 15 km that day. He showed us all these incredible places that you wouldn't normally see as a tourist.Lighting
The lighting was just perfect. Not too strong, not too weak, just perfect. I remember I had just returned from Norway at the time and the sun and the lighting were quite different compared to the Scandinavian environment, especially for that time.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7000, a Tokina 11-16 2.8, and my hands. No tripod, no flash, nothing else. When shooting on the street, it is best to take as less gear as possible, especially if you walk a lot.Inspiration
It was a spur of the moment kind of thing. We were initially walking the other way, my friend (the subject) being in the lead of the group, and we wanted to go to a park along Seine. However, the gate was closed and we couldn't pass. At that point I noticed everybody was walking back, up the stairs, so I quickly lowered my camera right above the puddle and took a few shots. Fortunately, I got the perfect moment.Editing
First, I converted the photo to black & white. It looked ok in color as well, but I felt the message was stronger in monochrome. Then I increased the contrast a little bit, some clarity, lightened up some of the shadows and that's it. I'm trying not to over-do my photos, keep them as real as possible. In my camera bag
I've mostly shot with my Nikon D7000 and a Tokina 11-16 2.8 or a Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC. They're both great lenses for street photography. The Tamron is incredibly sharp at 2.8 in decent lighting conditions. After 2 years of continuous use, it doesn't stop to amaze me. I also use a 50 mm 1.8G for street shooting, but it's not the most recommended focal length, especially for a crop sensor. But it's an amazing lens nonetheless. I took some of my best portraits at concerts in low light. Finally, I also have a Nikon 70-300 VR with which I used to shoot on the street, but lately I've changed my approach on street photography and I like to get closer to the subject, so I don't use it that much anymore. Still, it's a good lens. It never let me down.Feedback
If you're into street photography, you probably know how unpredictable it is. You sometimes may feel that you are the best photographer in the entire universe and other times you feel like throwing away your camera and giving up forever. When I look at this photo, I still can't believe I am the author. And it's one of the few shots that remind me how much I love photography and keeps me going. If you truly feel you were meant to become a photographer, keep shooting and try to anticipate the unexpected. I don't know if I am a photographer yet, but this shot gives me hope of becoming one some day.
