Behind The Lens

Location

Photo was taken August, 23 2007 at Killbear Provincial Park just outside of Parry Sound Ontario, Canada. My wife & I have been camping here for over 30 years, We started bringing our 3 boys each year not long after they were born. Sons are 33,30 & 26, and they come up with there families now when we are up there camping. We all still sleep in a tent, out in the wild with bears, deer, moose, fox's and my favorite creatures on earth...Owls. Every year we here the owls nearby our site or on it, only problem they come out at night and you can't see them. I've always talked to them and pleaded with them to come a visit during the day with no luck for over 20 yrs. Then, the night of August, 23, 2007 we had a huge storm hit us, it lasted for hours throughout the night. So bad was the lightening that we put the kids in the car where it was safest while my wife, Karen & I kept the campsite as secure as possible, considering the high winds, pouring rains, breaking branches, fallen trees we succeeded in saving the tent & our eating tent. The storm last all night and subsided around 7am. Karen stayed up to secure things that got loose and I just fell onto my sleeping bag and crashed. Only minutes had gone by when Karen came into the tent whispering that there was an owl on our campsite just sitting quietly on a branch. I jumped up as fast as I could ran to the car, grabbed my Nikon D70 with 80-200 2.8 lens. Karen had to point out where the owl was and when I first saw it I was so surprised that I started shooting from far back, my pic's were very blurry so I pumped up the iso a bit, calmed myself down and tried to get at least one photo I could print, but I still needed to get closer, & i needed to get my tripod. To my amazement with all my fumbling around the owl just sat there staring at me. I put my camera on the tripod and started walking closer towards the owl, little by little, closer and closer and he just sat and stared. I finally got to within 10 feet of him and took many photo's. I think he felt sorry for me and answered my request. Since then each year when we arrive these Barred Owls seem to know when we're there because they come by and visit, they don't stay long but long enough that we see them and say hi & Thank You!

Inspiration

When I was a teenager I got my hunting license, it was duck season and off I went to a place on a farmers field that I knew about. This was my first time hunting, I had to walk a distance along a tree line to get to a pond on the other side. On my way, in the distance I saw something white and big sitting in a tree only about six feet off the ground. I was able to walk right up to it and couldn't believe my eyes, it was a beautiful Snow Owl. Who would believe my story, I remember thinking I wished I'd had a camera instead of the shotgun. The owl and I just stared at each other for a good 10 minutes until I decided to leave and not hunt at all. I ended up just shooting clay pigeons instead of real birds and eventually sold my gun. Now I love shooting wildlife with only my camera.

Editing

No never have, maybe someday after I retire I'll be able to go back to night school and take some courses offered. I would love to learn how to use photoshop. I have so many thing in my mind just don't know how to bring them out properly. Hopefully someday!

In my camera bag

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8 lens, Nikkor 17-70mm lens & Nikon SB 700 flash. Wish I could afford more but you do what you can with what you're given!
