The photo was taken in Edinburgh City Centre. The old Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh used to stand on the site and is now partly demolished to make way for new Flats. The area is called Edinburgh's Quarter MileTime
It was taken just after 1 in the afternoon. I wasn't that far from the Castle and can remember hearing the one o'clock gun going off. As usual in Edinburgh when the gun goes off, the tourists jump and the locals check their watches.Lighting
It was a typical day in Edinburgh. The light was actually pretty flat. Grey/white sky. Grey should be Scotland's national colour!Equipment
I have the use, at the moment, of a Canon 5d mark iii. I was using a 24-70mm lens and although I had my tripod with me this shot was hand held. No flash used only natural light.Inspiration
That day I was on my way to The Witchery by the Castle restaurant in Edinburgh as I had been given permission to take a couple of interior shots there. My route took me through the Quarter Mile area and as I've said, it's currently under development. There is a huge contrast between the old historic parts of the Hospital left standing and the new architecture recently erected. The new part has some very interesting materials and lines which attracted me from a photographic point of view. I was actually moving backwards to get a perspective on another building when I looked up and saw the shot.Editing
The shot is actually flipped over 180 degrees so the bottom was actually the top if that makes sense. I was facing away from the building when I shot it and had taken about two or three facing away and looking towards the building and this was the pick of them. The image has been sharpened and the sky burned in as the highlights were pretty blown. The image was surprisingly straight for being hand held and looking straight up into the sky. Only minor cropping needed. I had a high ISO set and thought the noise added to the imageIn my camera bag
I normally use a Canon 650D but was lucky enough to get a loan of a Canon 5D mk iii for a wee while and had that with me. I have a 50mm prime lens and the 24-70mm as well at the moment. I always carry two remote shutter releases and have a Canon speedlight 430EX with remote triggers. A Manfroto 190 carbon fibre tripod completes the equipment.Feedback
Don't forget to look up! Merging or leading lines are easy to find among converging verticals.
