Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photo in my parents kitchen sink. It was an assignment for a photography class I was taking is college.

Time

If I remember correctly it was somewhere between mid morning and early afternoon. I just remember that the lighting was perfect.

Lighting

I was just a bright natural light coming through an open window.

Equipment

I used my sister's Sony Mavica MVC-CD500 (which was very high tech and fancy at the time), a standard tripod, red food coloring, and some water.

Inspiration

My professor gave the class an assignment to photograph something in motion. He said it would be interesting if someone could take a picture of a drop coming back up out of water, and would be curious as to how the process would work. I was curious as well, so I went for it.

Editing

Oh my gosh, yes! Starting out it was just a picture of a bowl of water in the sink. It was flat and had no dimension to it. I took it into Gimp (I was a college kid, I was broke!), cropped it to where you couldn't see the edges of the bowl, cranked up the contrast and brightness, and just monkeyed around with it after that. I remember being very proud of how this picture turned out.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D3300, lenses, filters, lens cleaning stuff. The normal things, nothing fancy.

Feedback

If you are going to be doing something like this you are going to need a lot of patience. I spent hours trying to get a perfect shot, and only a couple of pictures came out right! Also, use a remote on continuous shooting mode. It will make things a lot easier for you. As soon as you let the coloring out of your pipette, start taking the pictures, because things happen very very quickly.
