Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Onondaga Lake, Syracuse NY.

Time

April is the time of year when the Ospreys return to upstate NY. This was my first Osprey photo of 2015. I happened to be there at the right time when this male osprey came swooping in for a catch. He missed. But continued to hunt for a few minutes then moved on down the lake. This was late afternoon, around 6:00 PM.

Lighting

It was a cloudy day around 6:00 PM so I usually shoot aperture priority with 1/2 to 1 stop exposure compensation.

Equipment

Handheld 7D 70-200mm f/2.8 II 1.4 X Converter III This shot - 1/250 sec , f/5.6, ISO 400

Inspiration

I have a passion for Birds In Flight.

Editing

Minimal if any.

In my camera bag

Lens 17-55mm f/2.8 70-200mm f/2.8

Feedback

Use high shutter speeds when you have lots of light, minimal ISO, and f/stops from 2.8 - 5.6. It also takes lots of practice! Don't give up. You'll get that shot you're after eventually.
