Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the University of Minnesota Campus, underneath Moose Towers. The perspective is looking straight up the side of the building, turning the large and bulky Brutalist architecture into a serene skyscape.

Time

This photo was taken in the early afternoon when the sun was in the western sky.

Lighting

The position of the sun cast dramatic shadows on the building that give repetition to the photograph. The sky was completely clear so that only the sheer wall of blue meets the end of the pathway and evokes endlessness. The lighting also enhances the contrast in the pebble-like material that is used on the outside of the building.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3200 camera with a telephoto lens set to focal length 55mm in order to keep the same perspective as the human eye.

Inspiration

This building is almost always associated with being bulky and ugly. I wanted to find a different angle to show the beauty of the building and how simple and serene the planar walls are. I did a series of photos looking directly upward in order to create a skyscape with a conpletely different experience than the one the "real" building projects.

Editing

Yes I did. I mostly did lighting changes with different levels and curves adjustment layers in Photoshop. I also removed all color in the photograph except the blue sky and used a black and white adjustment layer with a lowered opacity to get the perfect shade of blue.

In my camera bag

I usually like to travel light and carry my Nikon D3200 camera and two lenses with focal lengths 55-200mm and 18-55mm.

Feedback

Change your perspective and look at things that people usually think is ugly. Find a sliver of beauty in it and people are sure to be astounded by the contrast of what expect and what you get to show them.
