I took this photo while on a school sailing trip in May 2009 with my daughter's Grade 8 class. I was very fortunate to be chosen (for the second time) as one of a few parent volunteers. We sailed out of the harbour in Victoria, B.C. and 5 days later we returned to Victoria. It was a fantastic trip and we enjoyed great weather. We traveled around the Gulf Islands off the southwest coast of British Columbia, stopping at a few choice destinations within the group of islands, The trip was set up through an organization which offers sailing trips to many schools from B.C. and beyond, teaching kids and adults the finer points of sailing as well as teaching those same kids and adults the finer points of community life.Time
I took this photo around noon on the last day of the trip. The weather was sunny with scattered clouds and our trip was nearing the end. This organization had 2 ships in it's fleet at the time of our trip and this is a picture of the other ship as both ships are sailing towards the harbour in Victoria.Lighting
I didn't really consider the lighting as it was an outdoor shot on the open ocean and I took what I could get.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS Rebel XSi with the basic kit zoom lens. Nothing else.Inspiration
I was very fortunate to be selected to join the kids and their teacher on this sailing trip and because of that, I soaked it all in. That meant I needed to take photos of all the activities and all the scenery and views I could possibly photograph. I took many pictures of the experience, and this one was, for me, a perfect shot (except for the blurry thing in the corner) of a great sailing ship. In fact, several years earlier with my son's Grade 8 class, I was on the ship shown in the photo .Editing
I don't really remember what post-processing was done except that the original was in colour and I converted it to black and white for posting on Viewbug. As you can see I didn't even remove the blurry thing in the corner. In my camera bag
I am a hobby photographer who works for a living. I do not have a multitude of gadgets in my bag these days - a Canon 7D Mark 2 camera with the kit zoom lens, a Canon flash, a Canon 2x extender, a remote shutter release, and once in a while, I will carry along my Canon f2.8 70-200 zoom lens. Of course, there will be an extra SD card, extra battery and charger, and other odds and sods one might need to have a bit of fun in the field.Feedback
The only advice I have for anyone who is taking pictures for fun, is to have fun doing it. I do not get too worked up about missing a particular shot, or getting the perfect picture (....except when it comes to eagles in flight hunting for food). This photo is one of many I took on that week long trip and I took it because it was a ship I had actually spent a week on several years earlier.
