Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Princes Pier in Melbourne Australia

Time

My then-girlfriend and I (now my wife) were visiting Melbourne and I had already researched where I wanted to go and what I wanted to photograph and Princes Pier was on top of my list. It was sunset already and we were quite late in getting there. There was a bit of a crowd too but I wouldn't have the chance to do this again so in the end the photo was quite rushed but came out better than I expected.

Lighting

I almost got there too late as the sun had already set

Equipment

Nikon D800e with tripod and shutter release cable

Inspiration

I had seen similar photo's before of this place and I wanted to at least emulate some of the best

Editing

It was a RAW file and with RAW files they come out rather bland so I used Lightroom and Photoshop to bring out the shadows and enhance the colours to what I really saw.

In my camera bag

I was in Melbourne for an airshow so I had my big Nikkor 150-500mm zoom which is quite heavy but I also had my 20mm wide-angle lens (used here) and my 35-55mm lens. I think I'd left the flash back home in Brisbane. I also had the tripod and shutter release cable.

Feedback

Practice. I've never done any courses but I do read a lot and try to emulate other photographs and that's taught me more than I think I may have learned (and subsequently forgotten) in a course.
