Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Ocean Beach in San Diego CA. It was a long exposure assignment with my photography group. We got lucky, the colors in the sunset were amazing i love the movement in the water and clouds.

Time

It was just before sunset, around 6:30 pm.

Lighting

This was golden hour so the light was amazing, my challenge was to use my variable neutral density filter to add some movement to an already surreal scene.

Equipment

Canon 70D, Canon 10-22mm at around 20mm. A variable ND filter, And my trusty tripod.

Inspiration

When i shoot landscapes I'm always looking for Color, Great Light, Texture and Movement, the night i took this shot i was fortunate enough to get all four. Knowing that i had an amazing scene in front of me, i just kept shooting recomposing and playing with my exposure until i was happy.

Editing

Yes i always finish off my images in lightroom and photoshop. I think i adjusted contrast, color, exposure, and highlights and shadows.

In my camera bag

Canon 70D, Canon 10-22mm, Canon 28-135, sigma 50mm, Canon 70-300 and a Tokina Fisheye.

Feedback

My advice on capturing an image like this. First timing is everything, you need to arrive either right before sunrise or right before sunset. Bring a tripod and an ND filter so you can get a long enough exposure to get movement in the water and clouds, here i think i was around 20 sec. And as with any great shot, luck is always nice to have, if it weren't for the colors in the sky and the cloud formations, i wouldn't have had much of a shot.
