Behind The Lens

Location

Across the river from Cincinnati, OH in Covington, KY is a scenic park called, "Devou Park". This photo was taken in that park.

Time

This photo was taken at 11:30 in the morning.

Lighting

Because of the low sun during a winter month, this shot caught the long shadows of the over hanging trees reaching across the road.

Equipment

The photo was taken with a Nikon D5100 with the 18-55mm lens set at 18. Shutter was 1/125 at f/11 and ISO of 160. No tripod or other equipment used.

Inspiration

The unusual scene of so much snow and ice on a bright sunny and cloudless day calls for a photo! Add a seemingly secluded winding road and taking a photo is a must!

Editing

Almost every photo, in my opinion, requires some processing. Of course, the goal is to minimize unnecessary work. In this case, once in Lightroom, all that was necessary was to pull down the highlights a bit and increase contrast to create the image I remembered seeing with my eyes. No other adjustments, including cropping, were needed.

In my camera bag

My camera bag includes a Nikon D800 which typically has the AF-S Nikkor 28-300 lens attached with a few assorted lenses if needed. Also in the bag is my Nikon D5100 typically with the 18-55 lens attached with a couple different lenses available for that camera body. There will be extra batteries for the D800, extra batteries for the D5100 which is loaded with two batteries. Two speedlights will be in the bag with wireless triggers and lots of batteries and a collapsible flash diffuser. Odds and ends include business cards, rubber bands, clear plastic bag (for camera if it rains) and hand warmers!

Feedback

My advice starts with, "Be outside, take a camera, take a photo". Don't be afraid to just explore different places and shoot at different times of the day. But, remember places you may like to visit again and plan ahead for day/night, time, and what equipment you will need to accomplish the photo you want. Yes, the "golden hours" are great and you should take lots of photos during that time. However, there are many hours left in the day and night that can yield greatly satisfying photos.
