I took this photo while i was visiting the zoo in Athens. The guys over there were really nice a let me take a photo of this horse up close with no strings attached.I had years to come this close to a horse:)Time
Well, if i remember correctly it was at 11 o'clock in the morning with the sun at its peak and no clouds unfortunatelly.Lighting
I don't know how many have taken a photo in Greece but, here the sun is always harsh and it's really challenging to capture a nice exposure. So, i had the sun hitting the face of the horse straight up.I used my friend as a flag to cut some of the lighting in the back of the head to stay more focused on the eye.Equipment
I used a NIKON D90 with a 18-200mm telephoto lens.Inspiration
Actually i was kinda lucky. When i was passing over the stable with the horses they had them out to feed them.At this point the animals are very close to the stands so you can basically feed them yourself. When i got closer to this horse i really liked that look that it gave me but only if you were up close.Sometimes you need to go really close to see something interesting and that's why i used a telephoto lens to zoom really close on its eye and capture that look.Editing
In post-process i did only 3 steps.I balance my photo with the raw settings to flatten my image in terms of lighting.Next i made a custom filter which is something like a black and white filter that it gives you some crispiness in the highlights, makes darker the shadows and also it give a more desaturate feeling than a black and white feeling.Last step was to burn and dodge some of my highlights and shadows and some sharpening. In my camera bag
My Canon 600D with my 50mm lense that i use the most.I add my 18-55mm next to them and my remote control.Next i put my batteries and my charger (cause you never know),a small tripod for low angles,my memory cards,a rain cover and small bag with tools(screwdriver and stuff like that) because u never know when u might need to screw something on your camera.I sometimes add a reflector and a small led in my bagFeedback
Well, since this was like my first experience taking images of animals i can pretty much say that you need to be prepared and quick because animals are not gonna sit there and wait for you to take an image of them.I think having zoom lenses on your camera is really important.Believe me you don't want to miss the chance of a nice photo because you were switching lenses. Also always be aware of the light.Lastly i would say to always be ready with your camera when it comes down to animals.
