Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the south-east suburbs of Athens.

Time

It was late in the afternoon. There was less than an hour of daylight left and this was the last photo I took that day.

Lighting

Having the light of the sun falling from behind the subject creates a dark mood in the photo and the silhouette of the man only intensifies this mood.

Equipment

My camera at the time was the Sony a37. For this photo I used the kit lens (18-55mm f3.5-5.6), a tripod and a remote shutter release.

Inspiration

I had already packed my gear and was preparing to leave, when I decided to take that one extra shot. My initial thought was that it would be a simple seascape with the rocks in the foreground. Halfway through capturing the sequence of photos though, I decided it would be better to include a person in the frame, so I began walking on the rocks, pausing in certain places.

Editing

The long exposure effect was made by merging about 100 photos using Enfuse. I then added myself in the image from a single frame. Finally, I brightened the shadows on the rocks to bring out the details and the texture.

In my camera bag

It depends. Sometimes I will bring two cameras with all the lenses my bag is able to hold, plus filters, remote shutter, batteries etc, while other times I may bring only a manual film camera with two prime lenses - a 50mm and a 28mm.

Feedback

Photography is above all a game with light. Every game must be fun, spontaneous and unpredictable. Always go with the hunch of the moment.
