I stopped on a trip to Northland while crossing the desert road. This is high desert with it's own ecosystem. Rearing up from the desert are the mountains of Ruaphehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. These are active volcanoes. to me, Ngauruhoe IS Mount Doom! I walked into the desert to get this shot.
