Location
I took this photo in Slovenia at the lake 'Bohinska Jezero' that sits in a deep valley and is shrouded in mist in the early mornings before the sun clears the surrounding mountains and begins to burn it off.Time
I started taking pictures at around 9.30 am to catch some misty shots before the sun hit the valley. This shot was taken at 14:09pm by which time the mist had cleared.Lighting
Lighting was quite awkward as there was huge contrast in areas where the sunlight was hitting the scene. This area still remained in the shadow of the mountains although you can see something of the strength of the sunlight beginning to hit the trees. The only way the image worked was to crop low to the trees to get a workable dynamic range in the image area.Equipment
I used a Nikon D700 with a 24-120mm f3.5/f5.6 AF-s VR lens, hand held at 85mm. ISO was 400 and image was shot at f9 at 1/320. Shot in Camera RAW mode with auto bracketing set to 1/3 stopInspiration
I was taking pictures for about 4 hours and traipsing around different parts of the lake edge and saw how the sun was beginning to hit the tree tops and 'illuminate' them whilst the rest of the scene (background and foreground) where still within the shadow area cast by the surrounding mountains.Editing
The shot needed very little post-processing. Just some clarity added in Lightroom to sharpen up the detail a tiny amount as my 24-120 lens isn't the sharpest of Nikon lenses. In my camera bag
At the time of this shot, my equipment consisted of a Nikon D700, SB800 Flash unit, Nikon 24-120mm VR zoom (not the newer & better f4 version), and a Nikon 28-200mm AF-G zoom which although a small lens is very sharp. Now I have added the following lenses to my kit: 14-24mm 2.8 zoom, 24-70mm 2.8 zoom, 70-200mm VRII Zoom, 50mm 1.8 prime, 105mm macro 2.8. prime.Feedback
Perseverance and patience is key. Looking at what the lighting is doing and trying to anticipate how it is going to change in order to get in the right position for the shot. Also with shots like this, the dynamic range can exceed the camera's dynamic range ability. Parts of the scene (outside of this shot) were in very bright sunlight and I had to be very careful to meter for the area I wanted to capture in the shot. I took lots pictures from slightly varying angles. In this shot I even waited for someone I could see walking by the lake edge to get into the shot to add some scale (Far right of shot).
