Location
This image was taken near the parking lot of Presidio Park in San Diego; proof you don't have to venture far for a beautiful shot! There is a beautiful museum on the property with gorgeous architecture, and it's one of the only places in San Diego that has a grove of Pine trees. Combine that with the open grassy areas and spring flowers, and it's the perfect place for a photo shoot!Time
As you may guess, this photo was taken early evening as the sun was going down. I schedule all my sessions to begin an hour and a half to two hours prior to sunset. This particular image was taken at the end of the shoot.Lighting
The light was setting in the West, illuminating the front of the subject nicely. Luckily, the direct light was diffused by the line of trees visible in the background. As the image reflects, the light was soft and peaceful, creating the ambiance you see here.Equipment
This image was taken using the 5D Mark II with my favorite lens at the time: Canon's 85mm/1.8. No flash was used and the camera was hand held.Inspiration
I'm glad you asked! This session took place after my clients had experienced the tremendous loss of losing an immediate family member to cancer. It turned into a 3 generational shoot, and throughout the session we were able to capture a bit of grief and reflection, yet also peace and a sense of healing. Somehow, ending the session with this innocent, beautiful child surrounded by the newness of spring flowers just seemed perfect. It's one of my favorite images.Editing
I did a little, although the original file is still beautiful. I enhanced the romantic feel slightly by modifying the colors a bit and adding a touch of haze.In my camera bag
I shoot with Canon's 5D Mark II. The Lowpro bag that accompanies me to all my sessions always contains the following: my back up camera, a 7D, along with Canon's 85mm 1.8, and my zoom 24-105mm f/4L. Just a few weeks ago, I traded in a couple lenses and bought my newest toy: Canon's 135mm f/2L! Oh yes, and since I like to be prepared, I also have a few band-aids, 1 or 2 funny hats, a rattle, mini-sewing kit, breath mints, bubbles or something equally fun, and a bunch of other random, yet practical items. (Yes, my bag is heavy).Feedback
It sounds obvious, but be aware of the lighting and how it's hitting your subject. Try to capture more than just someone or something; try for emotion or feeling. Move around as much as possible. As you can see, this shot was taken while I was practically laying down in the flowers. Wear the right clothes to shoot in. I almost always wear waterproof hiking boots to a session and that helps me be comfortable, yet more adventurous. Lastly, go with what you like! For example, I wanted the main focus to be on the child, so I shot this at f/5. I've read in photography books never to let the foreground go out of focus, but I personally like that look. Do your homework, but ultimately, choose what suits you best!
