My home town! This is Auckland's harbour bridge. Just along from its base on the city side is a long straight road, ideal for long boarding and the likes, and in the other direction a series of little docks protruding from a carpark. Although a 'carpark' doesn't sound too lovely, its one of my favourite parts of the city! You're looking out at this perfectly peaceful, serene harbour with no interruptions but these beautiful lights of the bridge and its travellers. I took this photo here, in my lovely harbour view spot.Time
Post sunset! One of my favourite times of day. It has that contented vibe of a city happy with its day's work, and you've just had an immense sunset to curtain that. Balancing this though is the beginning of the night and all the invigorating potential that comes along with it. The city's other half is just waking up; the feeling and the lingering light of this time of day is one of my absolute favourites to live and to catch.Lighting
The lights themselves show little Auckland's city pride! The bridge has been lit more than normal for a campaign, making it an all too tempting capture. I never get sick of the round spiked flares of distant street lamps, so capturing these with the bridge's reflections on the obliging harbour's surface was a shot waiting to happen. Its one of those shots that brings out the light a fair bit more than the naked eye, so capturing its is almost like catching some exclusively privileged perspective.Equipment
Our brand new Canon 70D, Kelly! Along with our good old tripod friend.Inspiration
We were actually originally by the waterfront so my friend Isaac could try to teach me to longboard. Pretty quickly it got dark and we followed the waterfront round to this spot with our camera, where literally the lights and the water were all that were needed for inspiration.Editing
None at all! Lately I've found something oddly nice about using my images straight from the camera. In my camera bag
Think what you will of me, but I'm pretty keen on the whole 'me and the camera' buzz. Tripods are invaluable in the right situations of course. Honestly though, most camera days I'll leave home with charged and ready camera over the shoulder and hope for the best, perhaps a spare lens in amongst uni books or clothes somewhere.Feedback
Do it for the view! Go view hunting rather than shot hunting, and when you realise you've been staring at something for quite a time and considering how fascinating or beautiful it is, then capture it. More technically, of course you want your slow shutter, smaller aperture and an absolutely still camera. Frame the things that let the image make you feel what the scene does, and embrace your dark spaces. And experiment! You never know exactly what sort of reflection or movement or moment you'll catch till you catch it.
