Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken outside in my neighbor's front yard.

Time

The late afternoon golden hour.

Lighting

The shot was set up because the afternoon sun had a beautiful soft light, no other lighting was used.

Equipment

This was shot laying in the grass with a Canon 5D Mark III and an 85mm 1.2.

Inspiration

The lighting was the original inspiration! This shot was completely spontaneous based specifically on the time of day. Our neighbors had just picked up "George" and I knew right away I wanted to photograph him. I noticed the lighting was perfect so I ran over and asked if we could get some shots. The clock was ticking so I quickly went back to my house and grabbed the doggie cookie jar. He was so small I needed to put a tshirt in the bottom because he wasn't tall enough to look over the edge! I tried to position the fence as a backdrop for the color and he somehow managed to stay still long enough to capture a few shots.

Editing

I use lightroom but did not need much post for this image.

In my camera bag

I typically have my trusty Canon Mark III with a 70-200 2.8, a 24-70 2.8, 16-35mm 2.8, and a 14mm 2.8. for shooting events and live music. I love the 85mm 1.2 for portraits and headshots.

Feedback

Pets can be challenging but with the right settings, conditions, and perhaps a bit of dumb luck the outcome can be worth every ounce of effort.
