I took this photo in our home office. Thor, our kitten, is very playful and like most cats loves to hide in boxes. So we made him a little hideout by taping a box shut and cutting a hole just big enough for him to fit in. He would play in and out of this for hours. So I grabbed my camera one day and took some pictures of him!Time
I believe it was mid day. It was one of my days off and I was working on some pictures on my computer and he was hanging out with me playing in his hideout.Lighting
This was taken with natural light from our office window. We have a light white curtain that lets in a lot of light so it acts a bit like a diffuser as this window gets direct sunlight in the afternoon which makes for nice lighting. I have taken a lot of pictures of my cats and baby in this room because in the afternoon the light diffuses so nicely through the curtain!Equipment
I used my Cannon Rebel XS with my 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. It is my favourite lens for taking any sort of portraits whether it be my cats, my 4 month old, or anyone else!Inspiration
I'm definitely a cat person and I love watching my cats play and playing with them. They make me laugh every day! They are so much fun to take photos of because their individual personalities come through in photos so nicely.Editing
I do 99% of of post processing in Lightroom. I increase the contrast on almost all my photos. With my photos of Thor I add some blacks to really make him stand out. I also increase the saturation of the blues and greens to make his eyes pop! This one I cropped a bit as well to get his right eye positioned along the right third line of the photograph. In my camera bag
My husband just got me a Canon 7D Mark II for my birthday so that is defiantly always with me! I also always have my 50 mm f/1.8 prime lens and I usually take along my Tamron 18-270 mm f/3.5 as well. It is great for such a wide range of shots so if I'm taking a walk and might want a wide angle for landscape or a zoom for something further away it is great for not having to change my lens and potentially miss the shot. I also have a microfibre cloth and some lens cleaner because you never know when you will get a smudge or dirt and don't ant those ruining a good picture!Feedback
Cats are so much fun to photograph but there are defiantly challenges. Make sure there is lots of ambient light or you have a good flash (I use a cannon Speedlite 430 EXII). When they are active and playing I always have it on shutter priority so I know I will get a good clean shot. When they are quieter and more relaxed is when I will play around with my aperture and spend more time on my settings. Getting low to the ground so you can get them at eye level always helps. Cats have so much attitude and personality and I think it really shows through when you capture their eyes!
