Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Eagle Heights nature reserve in Southern England.

Time

The photo was taken in the early afternoon as the sun broke through the ominous clouds.

Lighting

It was a very cloudy day when this shot was taken, but the sun broke through the clouds for about 5 minutes and lit up this spectacular bird as it turned to face me.

Equipment

Camera: Canon 650D, No tripod, no flash, Canon 70-300mm lens.

Inspiration

I love shooting wildlife so I headed to this nature reserve for birds to capture some shots that would be hard to take in the wild. They have a large variety of birds there so it was great to see so many in one place to shoot.

Editing

Just noise reduction and converting to greyscale in Adobe Lightroom. Nothing else was really needed here.

In my camera bag

I'm a bit of an 'all the gear, no idea' kind of photographer, so I take just about everything I own including a variety of lenses and a couple of tripods. Just incase I see something that might require it. Get kind of heavy though ;)

Feedback

I would say that nature reserves and sanctuaries are a great place to go and practice your skills with bird photography. They birds are flown in controlled areas so it's a little easier to hone your skills for flight and framing your shots for if you do go out to get wild bird shots.
