Behind The Lens

Location

First if all, thanks for the opportunity to display my photos. The Viewbug communiity is always welcoming and supportive. This photo was taken on Brighton beach here in Melbourne.

Time

It was around 7.00pm in the middle of Autumn (Fall). Autumn is my favourite time of year in Melbourne - as the air is still warm, storms come through occasionally, and the sunsets can be magical.

Lighting

As you can see from the foam on the sand, the sunset was just beginning. So I wanted to get that warm lighting before the storm clouds covered it. I was happy to get both a warm and cool feeling in the shot, especially on the rock surface.

Equipment

I have a Nikon D3200 base model. And I was playing with my new 50mm f1.8 I had just purchased. Great little lens. No tripod for this one, just balancing the camera on my foot while dodging the incoming waves. The quality lens helped to get a clear shot at 20th / second and f14.

Inspiration

I was playing around actually. Trying different angles and shutter speeds to get the motion of the waves and capture the warm light before it disappeared. And the simplicity of just a few elements - sand, rock, water, clouds. To my eye the colours looked great, and the camera helped me to slow it down and capture the movement as well. It was fun.

Editing

Some basic adjustments in Lightroom to the Raw file. Slight colour and brightness tweaks, and just made sure the rock was as sharp as it could be. Oh - and cleaned up some sensor spots. ( I need to get that cleaned one day dammit )

In my camera bag

Just the D3200, kit lenses, the 50mm, some filters, spare battery, torch, and a bag 'raincoat'. Nothing high tech or ultra expensive - maybe one day I can afford it.

Feedback

Just what I have learned form other photographers - look for contrast, great colours and lighting. Take a day trip somewhere, walk around, look for unusual or even basic scenes and test out angles and camera settings. And get in close to capture the textures and nuances of the scene.
