Behind The Lens

Location

I just took this photo in my bathroom. Let's just say my mom could have done without all the blood...

Time

I work from about 8-4:30 during the day, so most of my photos taken Monday-Friday are done sometime after that 4:30 time slot. So, I had been thinking about this photo all day and just went right into it when I made it home.

Lighting

I actually had some really nice natural light coming through the small window in the bathroom. So I left the light off and chose to use that instead. The original photo is actually much lighter which made for good levels when I went to edit it.

Equipment

I just got a new Canon 60d and a 40mm lens. So, I've been using both of those for most of my 365 pictures. I almost always have my camera on my tripod since my project is all self portraits. It's safe to assume I also used it for this photo.

Inspiration

I generally love the visual aesthetic of blood. It usually makes for a very dramatic or intense photo. That's really what I was going for. Along with a type of mystery behind it. The concept is supposed to be about how we continue to wash away our past, but no matter how hard we scrub we will always be stained of what we used to be. Hence the name of this photograph being "And then the sink stained red".

Editing

I usually do some sort of post-processing. Whether it be some simple adjustment of levels or putting together multiple layers. With this one it was more on the simple side. I mainly played around with the brightness, contrast, blur, and dodge and burned. It took a bit to get it where I wanted, but i also feel like you never actually get a photo how you exactly want it. So, for that, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

In my camera bag

Depending on the day, my equipment bag can usually be pretty light. I have my tripod, canon 60d, 40mm, standard 18mm-55mm, and 80mm-200mm lenses. Is that light?? Also, depending on the shoot I will have some kinds of props or different sets of clothing.

Feedback

When it comes to a photo such as this one, it really lies within the angle and the focal length. When you have a good balance between the two, you can come out with something pretty great. It's fair to say it took me quite a few tries to come up with this one! Don't settle for a shot you're not happy with. Keep going until you say, "That's the one!"
