Behind The Lens

Location

I am lucky enough to work where there are private ponds which attract birdlife, so am always on the look out for subjects to practise on, and there's never any shortage, and as I am still learning a lot about photography, practise is good!

Time

Because the ponds are at work, I am limited to before work, tea breaks, lunch and after work to be able to snap, this one was taken at lunch time, on a lovely calm day hence the excellent reflection - sometimes the wind gets up and whips the ponds into lovely waves, which are nice, but you loose the reflections of the birds.

Lighting

Because of the time frames I am able to photograph, lighting is a bit hit and miss, and luckily this day all the elements came together, producing the highlights on the feathers and the lovely reflections.

Equipment

I have a Nikon D3100 and used the 55-200 lens, and a lot of patience, sitting waiting for the birds to accept that I am there, and continue with their play.

Inspiration

Inspiration? the will to learn from photos I take, changing exposures, angles etc so most its being inspired to practise and get improve my photography.

Editing

I don't post process - I don't have the technology unfortunately - a bit of cropping is about as much as I do - I come from the old skill set where I learnt on slide and film, and particularly with slide, every shot had to count because of the expense in developing the films. One day I might get dragged into the 21st century, but at the moment I am happy with what I produce straight from the camera.

In my camera bag

My gear is standard off the shelf everyday everyone can afford it stuff, Nikon D3100, the lenses which come with it, the flare hood and the only addition I made to the it is a polarising filter.

Feedback

I guess the best advice I can give is watch your location and see where the birds gather the most, what time of day the play, what attracts them, feed the pond/lake, get them used to you walking past and then sitting down, and have LOTS of patience... sometimes I can sit out there all lunchtime and get nothing, other days I can get 10 or twenty really great shots and one awesome one.
