Behind The Lens

Location

I spent two months in Africa and, of course, being a photographer I had to take my camera. This one was taken at Kande Beach off of Lake Malawi.

Time

I got up early in the morning, around 5 am. I laid on the beach listening to the waves in the dark and as the sun started to rise I ran back to my tent to get my camera. The colours were mesmerizing.

Lighting

I have some darker shots and some just as the sun is beginning to show, but this was the most beautiful.

Equipment

I really didn't have much equipment because I was in a village in Africa and I couldn't carry it all. I put my Canon XS on a stack of books in the sand to give it stability.

Inspiration

The stunning beauty of the colours in the sky inspired me to take this. I got up the next morning and took a video also.

Editing

I actually didn't do any post processing besides cropping to print. I like to do most of the work on the camera.

In my camera bag

I used to have the Canon XS, but now I have the Nikon D750. I just got it and I'm stocking up on my Nikon equipment.

Feedback

First of all, don't set up too close to the water. Know when the tide will go out and come back in. You don't want your camera getting wet. This shot did take a lot of patience. The sun seems to move so slowly until finally you see it. Make sure you wear colours that stand out from the sand so no one steps on you!
