Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken aboard a large Catamaran on a Sunset Cruise just off the coast of Mallory Square in beautiful Key West, Florida.

Time

We decided to take a sunset cruise which I was just thrilled about because I jump at the chance for any opportunities to take photos. When the sun started it's slow descent, I was at the bow snapping away while the rest of the vacationers were into their cocktails.

Lighting

I simply used the beautiful lighting that the evening provided.

Equipment

This was shot handheld on my Nikon D3200 with a Tamron 16-300mm lens which I love. No flash.

Inspiration

To be honest, when the sun started to go down it wasn't throwing any color and I was starting to think it was going to be disappointing. But as that red ball of fire dropped below the clouds, I couldn't believe my eyes. And as luck would have it, the sailboat drifted perfectly into place at just the right moment.

Editing

When I took this I was new to post processing so I didn't do much. I cropped it a bit and adjusted the brightness and contrast, but can't say that there was a lot more than that. Oh, there was another small boat off on the horizon that detracted from the overall feel, so I cloned it out.

In my camera bag

This girl travels light, but I'm slowly acquiring equipment from my wish list. Besides my D3200, I almost always have that Tamron 16-300mm lens, my remote shutter, tripod, an extra battery and memory card. And a snack...there's always a snack in my bag.

Feedback

Be patient and don't leave until the last of the color has left the sky. The colors, rays, clouds, and items in your foreground are forever changing.
