Location
This photo was taken inside the old pumping station at Scienceworks at Spotswood in Melbourne.Time
This was one of my favourite shots taken on the day. It was inside a large building around midday.Lighting
Taken under natural lighting. The building had large windows on one side providing a diffused light source. Light level was low and required a low shutter speed.Equipment
I used a film camera - Minolta Maxxum 7 with 50mm 1.7 Minolta lens and natural lighting. Camera was handheld. Shutter speed around 1/60 and aperture f2.4. Film used was Fomapan 400.Inspiration
I knew that the old cast iron valve and handwheel would look great as a black and white image. It reminded me of similar industrial black and white images taken by some of the old masters.Editing
Developed in Rodinal 1:50 and scanned in an Epson V500 flatbed scanner. Lightroom used minimally to fine tune the blacks. In my camera bag
I have two kits - digital and film. Digital is my Pentax K20 plus numerous telephoto and prime lenses. My film bag changes between Olympus OM1's, OM4's and a Minolta Maxxum 7. I must admit that the Maxxum is my favourite at the moment.Feedback
Try film. I love it. Black and white can turn everyday images into something special. if it a dark subject underexpose to bring out the blacks. Practice is the key. Think about what you are doing and take your time to visualize the finished image in your mind before you release the shutter. Film grain can add rather than detract from an image.
